The ear is made up of three different sections: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear picks up sound waves and the waves then travel through the outer ear canal. When the sound waves hit the eardrum in the middle ear, the eardrum starts to vibrate. The vibrations then travel to the cochlea, which is filled with liquid and lined with cells that have thousands of tiny hairs on their surfaces. There are two types of hair cells: the outer and inner cells. The sound vibrations make the tiny hairs move. The outer hair cells take the sound information, amplify it (make it louder), and tune it. The inner hair cells send the sound information to your hearing nerve, which then sends it to your brain, allowing you to hear.

What then could be the cause of severe hearing loss?

1. Long-term Exposure to Continuous Loud Noise On The Job

A common culprit is workplace noise, like machinery. They can damage hearing over time. Wear earplugs or ear protectors that fit over the ear for protection.

2. Injury or Pressure Changes

Severe head trauma can dislocate middle-ear bones or cause nerve damage, causing permanent hearing loss. Sudden changes in pressure from flying or scuba diving can lead to damage to the eardrum, middle ear, or inner ear. Eardrums usually heal in a few weeks. In serious cases of inner ear damage, you may need surgery.

3. Medicine

Some medicines are causes hearing loss as its side effect. These include certain antibiotics and cancer drugs. Often hearing is monitored during these treatments. However, some hearing loss may be permanent. But hearing-related side effects go away when you stop taking the medications in some cases.

4. Headphones and Ear buds

Using headphones or ear buds can cause temporary or permanent hearing changes. The louder the volume and the longer listening time, the greater your risks may be. For safer listening, lower the volume and limit listening time.

5. Earwax Buildup

Earwax protects the ear canal against dirt and bacteria. But earwax can build up and harden. This blockage can affect your hearing.

Take good care of your ears. See your doctor if you have an earache, if you suffer from sudden hearing loss or hear noises in your head (tinnitus). Your doctor may prescribe medication or order a minor surgical procedure to help you if you suffer from any of these symptoms. Remember that it’s hard to lose one of our precious senses – our sense of hearing.
