Defective hearing can be caused by inadequate conduction of sound waves through the outer or middle ear to the inner ear, where they are converted into electrical impulses and transferred to the brain by the auditory nerve. Ear wax, aging and disorders such as Meniere's disease can all impair hearing.

Symptoms

  • A sudden reduction in hearing
  • The ear feels blocked - probably due to ear wax (or a foreign body in small children)
  • High-pitched sounds become gradually harder to pick up, from middle age onwards (an age-related problem)
  • Attacks of deafness with dizzy spells and buzzing sounds may indicate Meniere's disease

Cures

Naturopathy

A whole food diet and exercise, plus additional relaxation if necessary, will be recommended to optimize the health of the immune defense system and combat the aging process. Inhaled steam as a form of hydrotherapy can be used to relieve catarrh, which can temporarily clog the Eustachian tube leading from the middle ear to the throat, impairing hearing, and to provide a means of transport for plant remedies to the throat, head and neck.

Vitamins and Minerals

Ample supplies of fresh fruit and vegetables and their juice will be recommended for their antioxidant properties and nutrient content. A beneficial juice combination consists of 6 fl. oz. (150 ml) each of carrot, celery and apple.

Specific supplements include stress- and age-combating antioxidants such as vitamin C with bioflavonoids, B-complex vitamins, vitamin E, zinc and beta-carotene and the trace element selenium.

Herbal Medicine

Korean ginseng and Echinacea help to combat free radical activity, which is instrumental in the aging process. Ginkgo biloba improves the delivery of oxygenated blood to the brain, and thereby to the ear (and eye), which is useful when infection is present. Cayenne preparations are especially good for upper respiratory tract infections. For earache, medical herbalists often prescribe a tincture of pasque flower, which acts directly on the ears, perhaps combined with anti-catarrhal preparations such as goldenseal and eyebright.

Aromatherapy

Essence of clove and ginger help to relieve the nausea and dizziness of Meniere's disease. Hardened ear wax can be softened using a little warmed almond oil, containing a single drop of tea tree oil. Plug the ear with cotton wool and after a few days the wax should come away naturally.

Homeopathy

For ear wax, use Causticum 6c 4 times daily for up to 7 days, to combat copious production of wax with intermittent hearing loss. For Meniere's disease, take remedies 4 times daily for up to 7 days: Salicylic ac. 6c for muffled hearing and dizziness, followed by Chininum sulph. 6c in the same dosage; and Lachesis 6c if attacks begin on walking.

Medical Treatment

Earwax solvents will be prescribed for hardened wax prior to syringing the ear gently with warm water or removing the wax using an auriscope and a fine curette. Hearing aids will be advised for age-related deafness. For Meniere's disease, drugs such as prochlorperazine (Stemetil) act upon the inner ear's balancing mechanism.

Prevention

  • Do not poke soapy fingers (or anything else) down the ears - this encourages wax formation.
  • Combat aging free radicals with exercise and dietary measures.
  • Maintain the blood supply to the head and ears with dietary supplements, yoga and scalp massage.

Caution

  • Seek medical advice for diminished hearing whatever your age.
  • Symptoms such as those that occur in Meniere's disease can nearly always be treated.
